The Holy Face of Jesus: A Devotion of Reparation
The devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus is centered on honoring the suffering Countenance of Our Lord and making reparation for sins committed against Him, especially blasphemy, sacrilege, and indifference.
The devotion is rooted in the Passion of Christ, when St. Veronica courageously wiped the Face of Jesus on His way to Calvary, leaving behind a miraculous imprint of His Holy Face on her veil.
This devotion was deepened in the 19th century through the revelations of St. Mary of St. Peter, who received from Our Lord the call to make reparation for sins against the First Three Commandments, especially blasphemy and profanation of Sundays. She recounts that Our Lord said: “My Name is everywhere blasphemed! There are even children who blaspheme!”
The Church has consistently recognized the profound importance of this devotion as a powerful means of making reparation and consoling the Heart of Our Lord. In 1885, Pope Leo XIII formally established the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face, giving official ecclesiastical approval and encouraging the faithful to practice this devotion more widely. Devotion to the Holy Face not only responds to the sins of blasphemy and sacrilege, but also stands as a spiritual remedy against the evils that flow from the rejection of God in society. In particular, it has been encouraged as a means of combating atheistic ideologies such as communism, which seek to erase the knowledge and worship of God from human hearts and nations.
By honoring the Holy Face of Jesus, we affirm His sovereignty, restore reverence for His Holy Name, and draw down graces for the conversion of souls.
The Holy Face and the Message of Fatima
At Fatima in 1917, Our Lady revealed that many souls are lost because there is no one to pray and make sacrifices for them. She asked for the offering of daily sufferings, penances, and prayers, especially the Holy Rosary, as acts of reparation pleasing to God. This is the same request made by Our Lord to Sister Mary of St. Peter decades earlier when He taught her the Holy Face Chaplet and Golden Arrow prayer. The two streams of grace flow from the same divine source: a God who is grieved by sin, yet infinitely merciful, who invites souls to draw close to Him through love and reparation.
The Angel of Portugal, who appeared to the three children of Fatima before Our Lady's visits, taught them to bow low to the ground in adoration and to pray: "My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I beg pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You." This spirit of reparation for the sins of blasphemy and indifference, so central to the Fatima message, mirrors perfectly the intention of the Holy Face devotion, which was given specifically to repair the outrages committed against the Holy Name and the dignity of God.
When viewed together, these two great devotions form a unified response to the crisis of the modern world: a turning of the human heart back to God through humility, adoration, and love. Those who embrace the Holy Face devotion will find in it a natural deepening of their Fatima consecration, and those committed to Fatima will discover in the Holy Face a face-to-face encounter with the very One for whom they pray and sacrifice. For it is the Face of Christ, bruised, crowned with thorns, yet radiant with mercy, that is the true heart of all reparation, and the hope of the world.
